What Are Dental Implants?
A dental implant is an artificial tooth root set into your jaw, usually crafted from titanium. The implant post naturally fuses with your jawbone, resulting in a durable and long-lasting anchor for a range of restorations. Your implant posts provide a stable foundation for a set of natural-looking replacement teeth that enhance the aesthetics and health of your smile.
Our Efficient Dental Implant Placement Process
Before we begin the dental implant process, Dr. Nijhawan meets with you to answer any questions about the treatment and ensure you are a suitable candidate. He examines your mouth to check if your gums are healthy and that you have enough jawbone to fuse your implant to. If you currently suffer from gum disease, it must be treated before beginning the implant procedure.
Using digital imaging from a cone beam computed tomography system (CBCT), Dr. Nijhawan determines precisely where your implant needs to be placed. Inserting the implant at the proper location and angle helps it remain secure and able to support your dental implant restoration. Following his thorough planning, Dr. Nijhawan surgically places your implant.
Typically, your mouth is allowed to fully heal from your surgery before we place your custom-fitted restoration. The healing process can take eight to twelve weeks. Our dental office team will schedule your follow up appointments and we are available should you have any unexpected postoperative discomfort.
Extractions to Support Your Oral health
We may need to extract a tooth that is failing, or to create space for a more effective implant restoration. Our goal is to preserve your natural teeth for as long as possible. Should a tooth be infected, substantially damaged, or otherwise a risk to your health, we can perform extractions in our office. We discuss the possibilities available to you for replacing the tooth, including dental implants.
What are Bone Grafts & Sinus Lifts?
A bone graft is a treatment that increases the volume and density of your jawbone to allow it to support a dental implant. A sinus lift is a specialized bone graft used when there is insufficient bone in your upper jaw, where your implant will go. These procedures can allow you to have dental implant treatment even if you initially lacked jawbone density.
Should you require a sinus lift or bone graft, we have a trusted oral surgeon that visits our office to perform the procedure. By providing you with the service of an expert, we help your dental treatments go as smoothly as possible.
Rejuvenating Your Smile with Implant-Supported Restorations
After receiving your dental implants, we work with a top-quality dental lab to create your replacement teeth. Dr. Nijhawan sets your replacement teeth with careful attention to detail and checks to ensure they fit correctly and comfortably. Depending on your situation, we can provide:
- Implant Crowns to Replace a Missing Tooth: Implant crowns replace a single tooth by attaching directly to your implant post. We match your replacement tooth to the color of your natural teeth as closely as possible, so it blends with the rest of your smile.
- Implant-Supported Bridges to Replace Multiple Teeth: If you're missing multiple teeth we can provide you with an implant-supported bridge. The bridge consists of replacement teeth (pontics) and implant crowns. Your dental implants serve as the anchor for your replacement teeth. As an added benefit, your bridge prevents your healthy, neighboring teeth from shifting over time.
- Implant-Supported Dentures to Replace a Missing Arch: We can provide you with implant-supported dentures to replace up to an entire arch of missing teeth. These prosthetics are fixed in place and don't need to be removed like traditional dentures.
